Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond.
Where me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.
Chorus:
O ye'll take' the high road and I'll take the low road,
An' I'll be in Scotland afore ye;
But me and me true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomon'.
'Twas there that we parted in yon shady glen,
On the steep, steep side o' Ben Lomon',
Where in deep purple hue the Hieland hills we view,
An' the moon comin' out in the gloamin'.
(chorus)
The wee birdies sing and the wild flow'rs spring,
And in sunshine the waters are sleepin';
But the broken heart it kens nae second spring again,
Tho' the waefu' may cease frae their greetin'
(chorus)

Oban, Scotland 24.9.
The day started with carriage riding at a private stables. They offer about half an hour rides and the clients can decide if they want to join in and pay for the ride themselves. Two of the clients had signed up for this. The horse was already ready for the ride and there were a punch of locals volunteering and making the ride special for the clients. The clients seemed to enjoy themselves very much!
In the afternoon I got to join in for the film group for the first time. The clients were ready in their costumes. They are making a silent film in the 1920's style. We went through the script (the parts that were filmed today), there was a quick rehearsal and then it was action time! Last time they filmed at a location, this time at the center. The clients are really motivated in film making. And actually some of them are really good at acting and expressing their motions on camera. I hope to get to try some film making with my own students.
In the evening I went and listened to a local choir practice. Anna, one of the workers at the center took me!

I joined in the hydrotherapy at Fort William. We had more clients joining in than last week, there was a full minibus. Every client had an employee supporting them. So all the situations were very secure and also every client had enough attention in the water. Every client seemed to enjoy the water very much.
I have enjoyed my time at Lorne very much so far. One of the best things among the clients has been the staff. I have had very good discussions and everyone has been very welcoming! The staff including the managers have had time for my questions and they have also been interested in how things are done in Turku and Finland. The attitude towards me has been amazing: people are open, honest, fun-loving (ready to laugh as soon as situation occurs) and warm-hearted.
In the evening some of the staff joined me for a dinner at a local italian style restaurant. Delicious food and a great evening all in all!

23.9.2014, 7th day at Lorne Resource Center
In the morning I had my second chat with Janine. This time we had time to go through some materials that both of us use in our daily work helping clients/students to communicate. We would have had so many things to go through, but there wasn't enough time for everything.
I joined in the two art groups today. The one in the morning made jewellery out of old cutlery (forks and spoons). It was really interesting to see how it is done. I got to try it also, it was challenging at first, because it was completely new to me, but I made it!
In the afternoon the art group continued making the lanters for the winter festival. The theme had changed so first everyone drew their ideas of the new theme and then we made some willow work.

19.8.2014
First thing in the morning I had a talk with Janine, who is a Senior community learning disability nurse. Her job is to help the clients at the Center and Oban + surroundings with communication skills. It was very interesting to talk to her and compare the things that they do here and what we do at our college. We just had time for a half an hour chat so we decided to meet each other again next week.
At ten a group of clients went lawnbowling and I went with them. It was a bit like boccia or petanque. Everyone was really happy to join in and play. I had a change to play with the clients so that was a new expierience for me. It was actually harder than it looked. Afterwards we had pancakes and tea at the clubhouse.
In the afternoon I joined in on a music course. A music teacher Alistair was the leader of this group. The clients pay separately for him to join in the course, because Alistair is not permanent staff member at the center. Everyone had a change to sing in front of everyone and also everyone had to change to conduct others playing. Also Alistair had clients improvising with their instruments and others listening.
During the weekend I had a great time on the Isla of Islay. It is a beautiful island and famous for its distilleries. Mull of Oa was really beautiful.

There is excitement in the air because of the referendum. Tomorrow morning we will know the results.
Back to work then:The Center has around 35 clients and 12 employees. In Finland the Day centers (at least in Turku area) have a daily program that the clients of the center participate in every day. Except if they live in a dormitory. Then they would have one day off every week for cleaning their home and doing some grocery shopping etc.
In the Lorne Resource center the system is very different from us. The day center workers visit people at home if needed and do some individual work with the clients. Some people are visited almost daily and even on the weekends. At Lorna the center offers daily activities for their clients. And I have already told you about the activities (or at least some of them.) The service users can choose themselves, which ones they want to participate in. Many of the clients live on their own. If the person needs more support at home that Lorne Resource center can offer, the social work department will assess and provide care packages where a person can have a care worker at their home as much as needed. The care worker can either work for the council or a private company. In Turku the day centers offer only contract work or handicraft work at the centers. There is only one place that has a versitile weekly program with different clubs. But all the employees work only at the center with the clients. Jim told me earlier that their system was similar to us twenty years ago, so we have a lot of catching up to do.
The Center has clients in Oban, but also in the nearby island called the Isle of Mull. Today I participated in swimming at a local pool with two clients. I left Oban early in the morning with a ferry and I was accompanied by Fiona a community worker from the center. It took 45 minutes to get to Mull. (Wonderful scenery on the way!) In Mull we met Teen who works in Mull for two days of the week. There are 3 people using the centers services at Mull. We picked up the two clients that were service users today with a car and went and had a wonderful swim! Isle of Mull is really beautiful and I was really happy to see parts of it. On the ferry back from Mull I saw two porpoises.
After the ferry ride Fiona took me back to the center. I talked to Lynn and she showed me how they make the magazine and how the films that they make are done. I even got to see one film from 2012. It was amazing and fun. I will defenetely try to make a film with my students too.
In the afternoon I participated in a drumming session. I was very excited about it and it was really interesting to see how the clients got involved and got excited about the drumming too. Kirsty who was in charge of the session gave quite challenging tasks to the clients like skipping beats and leading the group by drumming, but the clients were delighted about the tasks. This was great fun!
